Emergency Auto Towing: What You Need to Know

Although automobile accidents occur every day, no one hardly ever expects to be in one. When you are involved in an accident, you are often in complete shock afterward. However, it is important to focus so that you can ensure that you are transported to the hospital. In addition, you need to make sure that your vehicle is taken care of. Keep reading to learn a few things about emergency auto towing.

1. Ensure You Are Not in Harm's Way

You will want to immediately switch on your hazard lights so that other vehicles on the road can see your vehicle. Although this is important at any time of day, it is that much more important at nighttime and when the weather is bad. If your vehicle can be driven, you should move it out of the middle of the road so that it doesn't result in additional accidents. However, if your vehicle cannot be moved, simply get yourself away from the wrecked vehicle and traffic.

2. Contact the Police

As soon as you have placed yourself in a safe location, call the police. The quicker the authorities can arrive on the scene, the quicker they will be able to keep traffic from entering the scene. In addition, you can let 911 know if anyone is injured on the scene so that medical attention can be provided immediately to those who need it. The authorities will create a police report, which will be necessary when you go to file an insurance claim and potentially a personal injury suit.

3. Secure the Scene

Until the authorities and towing company can arrive on the accident scene, you need to secure the area and your vehicle as much as possible. Do this by using flares and orange fluorescent triangles. You will set these up about 10 feet from your vehicle in front of and behind your vehicle and then another one about 100 feet from the first one. You can place another if you have it about the same distance (100 feet). This will help other vehicles know that you are broken down or have been involved in an accident, alerting them to slow down and switch lanes. It's wise to stay away from the car until the towing services arrive.
